In case you have made a SASSA grant application in 2025 and are now experiencing thoughts of anxiety regarding the entire process of approval and the date of payment, there is no reason for you to stay uninformed. SASSA has introduced various methods for checking your application status, all of which are very user-friendly, such as online, USSD, WhatsApp, SMS, etc. Therefore, the following is an extensive guide to using these resources to your advantage.
Reasons to Check Your Status
The application status is one of the most significant pieces of information that can be inferred from your application as it will indicate:
- If it’s an approval, then the payment time can be guessed at the same time.
- On the other hand, if your application is rejected, you will have no reason to carry out any further actions (or an appeal).
- In addition, checking your status will prevent you from visiting SASSA offices and thus it will be possible for you to react quickly to any questions or problems that might arise.
Online Status Checker via SASSA’s Portal
- Visit the SASSA SRD official website (srd.sassa.gov.za).
- Search for “Check Status” or “Application Status” section.
- Type your South African ID number and the mobile number which was used during the application submission.
- After that, press submit/check. OTP entry may be required for some systems, and it is the one-time PIN sent via SMS to you.
- You will see the status of your application (Pending, Approved, or Declined) along with the payment date if it’s available.
- This method of checking status is the most precise and current one by far.
Status via USSD Code (No Internet Needed)
SASSA has provided a service for USSD codes in case you don’t have a reliable internet connection:
- Dial *120*3210# (or another code like 12069277# depending on your network provider).
- Pick “SRD Application Status” or “SASSA Status” from the list.
- Fill in your ID number and mobile number in the designated spaces.
- Your application’s status will be shown on your screen.
This is an offline method and thus very suitable for those who have little or no internet access at their location.
WhatsApp, SMS, and Call
- WhatsApp: Send a text message to the number 082 046 8553 with your full name and ID number to report the status of your application to the service.
- SMS: Some people still get the status by simply sending “STATUS [Your ID]” to that number.
- Phone/Toll-Free Number: You can call the number 0800 60 10 11. First, select the Social Relief grant option and then provide your ID and mobile number to check your status.
If you cannot get to the portal or USSD service then these are the other ways of checking the status of your application.
Meaning of the Statuses
- Pending: The application is being reviewed. It can remain in this status until the identity or documents are verified.
- Approved: The application for the grant is accepted. The date of payment or at least the period during which funds will be available can usually be seen.
- Declined: The application was turned down. The reasons may be different, like exceeding the income limit or having discrepancies in the documents.
- Identity Verification Failed/Referred: Your information sometimes couldn’t be verified (for example, it didn’t match Home Affairs’ records) and the case has been sent for further review.
- In case of rejection, you have the right to appeal. The SASSA appeals portal is where you can check the status of your appeal:
- Visit the SASSA appeals page (through srd.sassa.gov.za)
- Input your ID and mobile number to follow the progress of your appeal.
