Entitlement to the “SASSA Old-Age Grant” in March 2025 for South African recipients will remain the same as ever, thus leading to no change in these grannies and grandpas’ monthly amounts. The oldest ones, who are over 75 years old, will keep on getting R 2,340, while those from 60 to 74 years will get R 2,320 each. The next day of the grant’s distribution is set for Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
Despite the unchanged amounts, the situation at SASSA and realignment in grant management still call for the beneficiaries’ close attention.
Postbank Transition & Risk In Banking
One of the biggest changes for the beneficiaries will probably be the end of the Master Service Agreement between SASSA and Postbank. The agreement, which was already postponed to the end of 2025 due to High Court intervention, is in danger of extinction. Postbank has cautioned that it may charge November recipients if a new agreement is not made soon.
About 2 million SASSA recipients are still on Postbank. To circumvent any disruptions, SASSA is advising those users to arrange their banking alternatives far ahead of the year-end.
Tighter Grant Reviews & Budget Cuts
The strict reviews on grants are being implemented more directly. Also, the 2026-2027 budget cuts will reduce SASSA grants by R14 billion per annum, thus the pressure on the system will increase. SASSA is searching and finding ways to cut costs and identify ineligible recipients.
Who Is Eligible & How to Apply
Who Qualifies?
The applicant must be at least 60 years old and not receiving any other social grant already in order to get the application going. The income and asset criteria must be satisfied by the applicants as well:
- Income limits: not more than R 107,800 per year (single) or R 215,760 (married)
- Asset limits: not more than R 1,524,600 (single) or R 3,049,200 (married)
Application Steps
Processing an application could take up to three months, however, if the application is successful, the payment will be back-dated to the application date. It is required to provide the following when applying:
- A valid RSA ID (Smart ID preferred) Certified three-month bank statements
- Documents related to marital status
- Proof of residence (not older than three months)
- Income and asset declarations
- Details of any private pensions held
In case an application is denied, the person can file an appeal through the Department of Social Development within 90 days.
Grant Reviews & Biometric Verification
Beneficiaries are not required to reapply every year but there may be cases when reviews and biometric enrolments become necessary for the continuance of eligibility. If SASSA sends a text message asking for documents, the affected person should go to the SASSA office and take with them not only the bank statements that are recent but also the proof of residence, the ID copy, and the supporting financial documents. When a review is successful, the grant will be given on a new “fourth” payment date, which will be after the distribution of core grants.
