In a bold and historic gesture, the South African government has granted a 22% across-the-board simply for public sector workers allowance which will be applicable to all departments. The allowance hike that is set to start from November 2025 is meant to cushion the workers against the effects of the rising cost of living and to also appreciate their efforts in serving the public.

Those working in the Education sector, for example, will have their monthly allowance increased from R3,500 to R4,270, and the Health sector will experience a similar raise from R4,000 to R4,880. The other sectors such as Police, Public Works, and Transport will also have their allowances increased in the same way.

Employees Along with the increase in allowances, employees who meet the criteria will also be given a performance-based one-off bonus. The employee must have scored at least 75% in their 2024 performance review and must have no disciplinary action against them. This will apply to contract workers only if they have served for at least ten months. Different departments will have different amounts, which will be paid through the normal payroll system along with the October 30, 2025, disbursement.
